Pronouns- are the words used in place of nouns.eg-he, she, they

etc.

Kinds of Pronouns

1) Personal Pronoun- Personal pronouns are those pronouns which replace names of persons or

things.

eg- Seema is a new student. Earlier, she was studying in Bengaluru.

Personal Pronouns refer to three persons namely first, second and third person and genders namely

female, male and neuter.

1st person- the speaker of the sentence, eg- I, we.

2nd person- the person spoken to, eg-you

3rd person- the person that the speaker is talking about, eg- he, she, they, it etc.

Personal Pronouns are- I, me, we, us, you, he, him, she, her, it, they and them

2) Possessive Pronouns- are those which show possession or ownership.

eg- mine, ours, yours, his, hers, theirs

∙ The book lying there is mine.

3) Demonstrative Pronouns- These are the words that indicate nouns in a sentence. eg- this, that,

these, those

∙ This is the pen I was looking for

4) Interrogative Pronouns- are those that ask questions.

eg- who, what, which, where, why, whom etc.

∙ What are you doing?

5) Reflexive Pronouns-Words such as myself, ourselves, yourself, himself, herself and themselves are

called Reflexive Pronouns. They are used to refer back to the subject of the

sentence.

eg- Raju hurt himself while coming down the stairs.

6)Emphatic pronouns-When the words myself, itself, yourself, herself etc are used for the sake of

emphasis and not merely to refer back to the subject, they are known as Emphatic

Pronouns.

An emphatic pronoun is placed immediately after the pronoun or noun it lays emphasis upon.

eg- I myself checked that the door was locked.

7) Distributive Pronouns- Distributive pronouns such as each, either, neither and so on are used to

refer to persons/ objects one at a time.

eg- Neither of them plays well.

8)Relative Pronouns- are pronouns that are used to add information about a noun already mentioned.

They also help to join two statements.

eg- which, that, who, whom, whose etc.

∙ The man, who came home yesterday, is my friend.

9) Indefinite Pronoun-These pronouns refer to persons/things in general rather than to anything

specific.

eg- anybody, somebody, all, somebody, someone, something etc.

∙ I don’t know anybody in my neighbourhood.
